For the longest time, flower pots were made mostly from earth-based materials such as clay, or metals such as steel or aluminum. Many of them still are.
There is, however, a rising trend in the production of fiberglass flowerpots, and there is a good reason behind it. Fiberglass effectively offers all the benefits of these other materials, and many of the advantages they do not.
Here’s what you need to know – If you are going to outfit your home or office with plants outside or inside, consider fiberglass when the time comes to buy.
1. Lightweight
Fiberglass is a lightweight material. It can be easily moved around to suit the environment. That’s one of the benefits of a fiberglass planter, and it has to do with lightness. As you may know, clay, steel, or aluminum flower pots can easily weigh several hundred pounds. Aluminum is lightweight, but not as easy to find.
An empty fiberglass flowerpot – always a large one – is fairly lightweight. A person or two can easily and efficiently move the largest fiberglass pots, so if you want to move them around all seasons, fear not.
2. Durability
Fiberglass is a durable type of material for pots. Fiberglass is more than just light. It has an unusually high intensity-to-weight ratio. We have no hard figures, but it is probably better when compared with steel. They are definitely superior in strength to plastic planters.
Aluminum probably wins on the strength-to-weight front, but it’s not as easy to spot. Fiberglass, by contrast, is readily available and affordable. If you are worried about fiberglass pots being strong enough to hold your biggest plants, there is nothing to fear.
3. Weather Resistant
Fiberglass planters are perfect for indoor and outdoor spaces. This is not an advantage over earthenware or metal, but over plastic. Weather-resistant fiberglass can be a concern if you are going to place your pots outdoors rather than indoors. Plastics degrade over time in sunlight and eventually discolor and fail.
This does not happen with fiberglass, despite the fact that it is stronger than plastic while remaining comparable in plasticity. This makes fiberglass excellent for indoor and outdoor spaces such as offices and gardens.
If you are looking for durable, high-quality planters to spruce up your garden or office, fiberglass planters are truly the best option. While plants should certainly take center stage, a fiberglass flower pot is an amazing accent to any residential or commercial plant design.
